An essential oil is a concentrated oil, sometimes known as volatile (simply because the oil is hydrophobic) oil.
An oil is described as 'essential' in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent of the plant. Generally essential oils are extracted by distillation, or by pressing the relevant part of the plant that is used, usually cold-pressed.
Used medicinally throughout history essential oils have now built up a huge following for the treatment of many conditions ranging from insomnia through to skin conditions, via mental alertness and relaxation.
